Wellness ยท Argument Cooldown Note

Process a fight before you say something worse.

Who this is for

Anyone who gets flooded in conflict and needs to process before responding, so they react like the person they want to be.

The moment this saves you

I have a fight with my partner, I'm too flooded to think straight, and if I respond right then I always say the cruelest possible thing and make it ten times worse than the original problem.

See it work

Messy spoken thought in. A clean, structured artifact out.

What you said

Okay I just had a huge fight with Jordan and I'm so angry I need to not text them right now. What happened, they made a comment about how I never help with the planning, in front of friends, and I felt humiliated and attacked. What I actually feel underneath the anger, honestly hurt, and a bit guilty because there's some truth to it. What I think they were feeling, probably overwhelmed and unappreciated, this has been building. The real issue isn't the comment, it's that they feel like they carry the mental load and I haven't acknowledged it. If I respond from anger I'll just defend myself. What I actually want is to come back and acknowledge their point.

  • What happened: Jordan said I never help with planning, in front of friends. I felt humiliated and attacked.
  • What I actually feel (under the anger): Hurt, and a bit guilty, there's some truth to it.
  • What they might have been feeling: Overwhelmed and unappreciated; this has been building.
  • The real issue: Not the comment itself, but that they carry the mental load and I haven't acknowledged it.
  • What I want to do: Come back and acknowledge their point, instead of defending myself.

The prompt behind this context

system prompt

I'm going to process an argument I just had, while I'm still flooded. Turn it into a dated cooldown note: a bold "Argument cooldown, [today's date]" heading, then labeled lines: What happened (the trigger, factually), What I actually feel (under the anger), What they might have been feeling (perspective-taking), The real issue (the deeper thing under the surface fight), and What I want to do (a constructive next step, if I name one). Keep my honest feelings. Do NOT take sides, assign blame, or give relationship advice. Don't invent what the other person felt beyond what I speculate. Output only the note.
