Cloud Mode
The fastest and most convenient option. Your audio is sent to our secure processing partners, converted to text, and immediately deleted. We never store your voice recordings, and we never use them to train AI models.

BYOK Mode
"Bring Your Own Key" — use your personal API keys from providers like OpenAI, Anthropic, or Deepgram. Your audio goes directly from your computer to their servers. We never see it, touch it, or store it.

Offline Mode
Everything happens on your computer. Your voice is converted to text using software running locally on your machine. Zero internet connection required. Perfect for sensitive work, NDAs, or when you're completely offline.

We're tool builders, not data collectors. We have zero interest in your conversations, your transcripts, or your voice patterns. Here's exactly what we do (and don't do) with your data:

When you use Cloud Mode, your voice recording is processed and then permanently deleted. We never store it.

Here's what privacy-first means in practice.
Your transcripts don't sync across devices by default.
If you use Contextli on your laptop and your desktop, your transcripts stay separate. What you record on one device won't automatically appear on the other.
Why? Because syncing requires storing your transcripts on our servers. And by default, we don't store anything. Your privacy comes first.
But you can enable cloud sync if you want.
We know some people want their transcripts available everywhere. So we built an optional cloud sync feature. Turn it on, and your transcripts will sync across all your devices.

The bottom line: We chose privacy over convenience by default. If you want convenience, you can enable it. But we'll never assume you want us to store your data — that's a choice you make, not one we make for you.

Which mode should I choose?
Cloud Mode if you want the fastest, most accurate results and don't mind your audio being processed online. BYOK Mode if you want to use your own API keys and have complete control over where your data goes. Offline Mode if you're working with sensitive information or need to work completely offline.
Can I switch between modes?
Yes! You can switch between Cloud, BYOK, and Offline modes anytime in the app settings. Each mode works independently, so you can use Cloud Mode for quick emails and Offline Mode for sensitive documents.
What happens to my transcripts?
By default, transcripts are stored locally on each device. They don't sync across devices unless you enable cloud sync in settings. We never upload your transcripts to our servers by default, and we never use them for training or analysis.
Can I sync my transcripts across devices?
Yes! You can enable cloud sync in Settings → Privacy. When enabled, your transcripts are encrypted and stored securely so you can access them from any device. You can disable it anytime, and we'll delete all synced data from our servers.
Is Offline Mode slower?
Offline Mode processes everything on your computer, so it depends on your device's performance. Modern computers handle it well, but Cloud Mode will always be faster since it uses powerful servers. The trade-off is privacy vs. speed — you choose what matters more to you.
